On February 4, 2023, around 10:23am YCSO Deputies responded to the report of a shot dog by an unknown suspect in the Bridge Canyon area. 

On their way to the scene Deputies dispatched Seligman Fire to the incident in the event they may be able to administer life saving measures to the pup, Saphire. Once on scene first responders found a struggling Saphire being held by her owners.  Fire loaded Saphire up in the truck and swiftly brought her to the fire station.  Once there, the fire crew began sterilizing the entry and exit wound sites; It was later determined that a gunshot had caused the injury; entering through the mouth area and out the neck.   Saphire was bleeding profusely out of the nose and mouth.  She was lethargic and appeared to be breathing in significant amounts of blood.  Understanding the blood was entering the lungs, causing Saphire to “gargle”, YCSO Deputies and Seligman Fire personnel quickly combined brainpower and constructed a makeshift Nasal pharyngeal airway (NPA) out of a piece of nasal cannula tube (typically used to deliver supplemental oxygen to a patient in need of respiratory help).  Fire staff was able to place the makeshift NPA down the dog’s broken nostril and bypass the injury to provide airway.  Saphire began to breathe through the tubing which gave her owners enough time to get her to the Yavapai Emergency Hospital in Prescott Valley for proper treatment.  

We are thrilled to report that Saphire is currently in good condition and is expected to survive.  

There is currently no known suspect.
