The Trump administration and the Centers for Disease Control are recommending that people wear masks when leaving their homes during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Arizona businesses are answering the call by making masks for essential workers and those most vulnerable to the virus.
One such business is Ortho Mattress, which has turned its Phoenix factory into an 1,000-mask-per-day production plant. These non-medical protective masks (called Orthoguard Masks) will not be rated for health care workers. N95 respirator masks are already in short supply and must be reserved for health care professionals. In accordance with the CDC, protective masks should be worn out in public and in doing so will help slow the spread of COVID-19.
In a press release, Ken Karmin, the CEO of Ortho Mattress said, “Our heart went out to our customers in hospitality for the immediate need to protect their workers, and we now are embracing this call to action to support others in our community.”
The masks made by Ortho Mattress started shipping on April 6 in packs of six, 12, 30 and 60, and customers only need to pay the cost of shipping to acquire their masks.
